This photo was found among
Elizabeth Hulburd- Hine-Alderson's (my mother's) family history
files after her death in 1996. Inscribed on the back in
mother's
hand writing is: "My Great
Grandmother Knowles (Haus' mother - maiden name Moore) - this
picture 90 years old in 1943. Nan 76 in 1943."
Mother's great grandmother was Emma
Moore-Knowles. "Haus" was mother's grandfather Henry E.
Hulburd who married Emma's daughter Ella Knowles-Hulburd ("Nan").
Mother's reference to "Haus' mother.." clearly should have read "Haus'
mother-in law".
1943 was the year Ella Knowles-Hulburd
("Nan") passed away and could be the year mother obtained the photo and
wrote the inscription on the back. 90 years prior to
then would have been 1853 and Emma Moore, born in 1844, would have
been about 9 years old that year. The young girl in the photo
appears to be about that age.
As I write this I'm wondering however
whether the art and science of photography in 1853 was as advanced
as this photo (about 5-1/2"x8-1/2" laminated on lightweight
cardboard) suggests. (I'm no expert on the history of
photography.) If mother was mistaken or misinformed, perhaps
this is a childhood photo of Emma's daughter, Ella. |
