Samuel Hine Family Portrait (circa 1880)
Seated:  Samuel and Emma Kirtland-Hine.   Standing L-R:  Homer Henry Hine, Ellen Louise Hine ("Nell"), Charles Potter Hine ("Charlie"), Samuel Kirtland Hine ("Kirt"), Alfred Blakelee Hine ("Alf")

The photo in it's original 20-1/2" x 17-1/2" ornate frame.
It was removed from the frame for digital scanning.

The original photograph, mounted in its highly ornate and decorative wooden frame, came to me when my father, Edward Kirtland Hine (“Kirt”, 1916-1977), passed away.  It currently hangs in the den of my Louisville, Colorado home.

I distinctly recall this portrait hanging in the dining room of our family home in North Caldwell, New Jersey when I was a child in the 1950’s and have photographic evidence of this but I can only speculated as to who had possession of it prior to then and how and when it came to us there.

It’s probably safe to assume that it originally hung in the Samuel Hine family home at 441 South Main St. in Poland, Ohio.  It’s possible that father may have obtained it upon the death of Samuel Kirtland Hine in 1942 as his “Uncle Kirt” had no children to pass it on to.  It’s also possible that it stayed in the Poland home till the death of Ellen Louise Hine in 1955 since father’s “Aunt Nell” also had no children to claim it.  I think it is unlikely that it passed through the home of Homer Henry Hine (father’s father and my grandfather) in Seattle as his wife Rose resided there till her death in 1967, long after I know the photo to have been displayed in my childhood home.  The other two siblings in the photo, Alfred and Charles, both did have children who likely would have claimed it given a chance so I doubt that they ever had possession.

The current owners of the old Hine home in Poland, OH have indicated that this photo was likely taken in the home's living room.  I've estimated the date based on the approximate age of Homer (far left) who would have been 6 years old in 1880 and Charlie (center) who would have been 3.

The following photo of the children, found in a Cabinet Card photo album at my aunt Ruth Hine-Darling's home,  was most certainly taken at the same time.

L-R:  Charlie, Homer, Alf, Nell, Kirt
