Tuckerman Ravine Spring Skiing Video

  Run Time 2-1/2 minutes

Tuckerman Ravine on New Hampshire's Mt. Washington offered some of the most extreme skiing in the country in the 1930's and to a lesser degree still does as I write this in 2011.  The mountain effectively can't be skied in the winter due to extreme weather, deep snow, and no uphill lifts which makes access almost impossible.   However, in the spring when the warm days softens and compacts the snow, access on foot becomes possible.

In the 1930's when Kirt frequently skied Tuckerman Ravine in the spring when it was a place only a few skiers had heard of and only a handful of the hardiest skiers ventured to as there weren't many skiers around then what with the sport just in it's infancy.    By 1990 when this video clip was nationally broadcast on ABC's evening TV news show spring skiing in Tuckerman Ravine had become very well known and popular.  I believe Kirt skied there earlier in the spring (March and April) when there was still more snow on the ground the shown here but this video clearly shows what his experiences there must have been like.
